A new study by SEO agency, ClickSlice, has revealed a huge difference between annual leave allowances across the globe, with a whopping 44 days between the most and the least days given.

Average length of leave

Despite many countries considering four weeks leave as the norm, ClickSlice’s report showed the average length of leave was just 18.2 days.

The average number of paid public holidays worldwide is 11.8 days, with only six countries having more than 20.

Countries with the highest number of paid leave days

Iran ranks first out of 197 nations with the most generous paid leave, offering a total of 53 days, which includes 27 paid public holidays.

In Europe, Belgium, Finland, France, and Norway have the joint highest leave, with 30 days paid leave each. San Marino, however, stands out with the most public holidays at 20 days per year.

Countries with the lowest number of paid leave days

At the other end of the spectrum, Micronesia emerged as the country with the lowest number of paid leave days, offering just nine.

The United States follows closely, offering the second lowest number of paid leave days, with only 10 paid holidays and no statutory paid vacation days. According to the report, U.S. employees typically receive 14 days of leave after their first year, though 15% of civilian workers receive no paid leave at all.
